Is it safe to reuse PET 1 bottles?

Yes. A PET 1 bottle can generally be reused for water if it is clean, undamaged, and used as intended. The “1” inside the recycling symbol identifies polyethylene terephthalate, a plastic commonly used for beverage bottles. It does not mean the bottle becomes unsafe after one use.

For everyday hydration, the bigger concern is often cleanliness. Bacteria can collect around the mouthpiece, cap, and scratches, especially when a bottle is left warm or refilled without washing. A disposable bottle may also wear out faster than a bottle designed for repeated use.

How should you clean a reused PET bottle?

Wash the bottle and cap with warm water and dish soap, then rinse thoroughly and let them air-dry. Use a bottle brush when you can reach the inside, and pay attention to the threads and any drinking spout. Clean it regularly, particularly after it has been in contact with your mouth or your pet’s saliva.

Avoid very hot water unless the manufacturer specifically says the bottle can handle it. Heat can distort thin disposable bottles. Likewise, don’t put one in the dishwasher unless it is labeled dishwasher-safe.

When should you replace a PET 1 bottle?

Recycle the bottle when it is cracked, deeply scratched, cloudy, misshapen, or has an odor that remains after washing. Replace a cap or spout that no longer closes securely or cannot be cleaned properly. Don’t reuse a bottle that previously held a nonfood chemical.

Keep water bottles away from prolonged heat, such as inside a hot car, and use them for cold or room-temperature drinks. PET is not typically made with BPA, but that does not make a worn or dirty bottle suitable for continued use.
